Waipio Valley
A thousand feet deep, a mile across, six miles long, the Waipi'o Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii is the largest and most spectacular of the series of amphitheater valleys on the windward side of the Kohala Mountains. The hike in and out of the valley is very steep (a 25% grade). At the bottom, follow the trail to the left up-valley and you encounter the Hi'ilawe waterfalls pouring straight out of the clouds and falling a thousand feet before disappearing into the coconut palms. If you follow the trail to the right to the ocean towards Waipi'o Beach, you will take an easy walk between ferns and elephant-ear plants and past African tulip trees aflame with red blossoms, through groves of sinuous trees until you reach the beautiful black sand beach. For the really adventurous you can take the trail to the Waimanu Valley at the northwest wall of the beach.

Petroglyphs at Volcanoes National Park
|
Volcanoes National Park (about 1.25 hours from Hale Huna Kai) is huge, encompassing the enormous Kilauea Caldera and featuring miles of trails that cross lava fields, deserts, rain forests, beaches, and, in winter, snow. Active lava flows can often be viewed at ocean side. The hike to see the flow could be a short or long one, depending on the path that the flow is currently taking. Usually this hike is over semi-rough terrain. The visitors' center at Volcano will alert you to current conditions.
